I am married with two young adult daughters and am a highly qualified early childhood teacher with nearly 30 years experience in Children’s Services. My background is extensive, having previously worked in long day care, preschool and 24-hour care.
I initially joined Sutherland Shire Council’s Family Day Care Scheme as a registered Family Day Care Educator in 1997. I temporarily left the Scheme at the time of having my second child, after which I enjoyed being a mum and spent some time in part-time work. I returned to Family Day Care as I believe it is possibly the best early education and care service available to children under the age of five years.
ABOUT MY SERVICE
My service is open Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday from 7:30am until 5:30pm and caters for four children per day.
I provide a daily program for the children based on each child’s individual interests and developmental goals. I maintain regular written observations of each child and use these to further develop the program available to the group, in all cases linking it back to the Early Years Learning Framework as well as other theorists’ works.
The children in my care have opportunities to explore our community, with regular visits to the local park and library, as well as organised excursions and activities based on the children's interests and developmental milestones.
From a location perspective, my service is located just two minutes off the Princes Highway in Engadine which is ideal for parents travelling from Wollongong and the South Coast.
My Family Day Care service is operated from my home in a quiet, conveniently located street in Engadine just two minutes off the Princes Highway. I have a dedicated facility established specifically for the children in my care. The children have access to a range of toys and planned activities throughout the day.
Our daily routine incorporates a variety of structured and free play activities, such as craft, play dough, blocks, puzzles, manipulative toys, drawing, outdoor play and group times with music, movement, language and literacy experiences. There are also opportunities throughout the week where we visit the local park.
I have a large, outdoor deck covered from the sun where the children can enjoy many outdoor experiences such as a sandpit, gross motor toys (bikes, ride on toys, tunnels), balls, and science and nature activities including gardening.
I recognise that during the early formative years that children form who they are as individuals. These years are the foundation on which children base the rest of their lives. Children are full of potential and are highly confident and capable of building and developing their own ideas.
I believe that respect for each child and their family is paramount. This is expressed through listening, observing and interacting with families. Constant communication is the key. I recognise that the family is the child’s first and most important teacher. Parents are viewed as partners, collaborators and advocates for their children. At my service I involve and invite parents into every aspect of the curriculum. I embrace cultural diversity, respecting each family’s diverse values, beliefs, cultural backgrounds, traditions, life experiences and knowledge. Families are encouraged to share their culture, language and experiences with the group.
I recognise and value the relationships children have with me and the other children in care. My own family are also an integral part of the education and care I provide to the children.
I provide a learning environment which is inclusive and respectful to all. I am very aware of my position as a role model supporting each individual child, and providing the best possible outcomes for children.
I believe children develop a true sense of belonging when they enjoy an environment filled with connections with peers, Educators, other carers, the community and their natural environment.
I am committed to professional teamwork, and ongoing professional development to extend my skills and abilities.
I provide a very welcoming, warm and adaptive learning environment where children learn and develop by exploring their world through stimulating and challenging play. I plan for children’s learning around their interests and their own specific needs, guided by the National Quality Standards, the Early Years Learning Framework and the School Aged Care learning Framework (‘My Time, Our Place’). This provides opportunities for children to reach their potential in all areas of their development: physical health and wellbeing; social; emotional; language and cognitive; and spiritual.
"My boys have grown up with Jillian over the past three years and all of us love her. She is professional, kind and caring, always putting the kids first and looking at new ways to improve their early education. Jillian absolutely puts the 'family' in Family Day Care, and I can't recommend her highly enough". Jessica.
"We were in the fortunate position of having the option to choose between Jillian’s service or another Family Day Care service run through a private organisation. We chose to meet with Jillian as she is registered with Council’s Children’s Services unit meaning that her service is governed by their stringent safety policies and procedures – something that gave me confidence when handing over my child to a complete stranger.
When we first walked through Jillian’s doors I couldn’t have imagined that both myself my daughter (and now son) would form such a strong bond with Jillian and her family.
Initially we made the decision to switch to Family Day Care mainly due to the small groups and there being less chance of my daughter continually getting sick from being exposed to so many other kids, as was the case at long day care. Little did I know, there are so many more benefits to Family Day Care which Jillian demonstrates week in and week out.
I love how much she genuinely cares for the children. I love her communication with parents – the occasional text message during the day with a reassuring photo and then the detailed daily emails and photos of the group. I love how she personalises her care around the needs, interests and different stages of development that each of the children are at. Jillian is an extremely experienced and competent Early Childhood Teacher who has taught my children so much and has been such an integral part of their development. I can’t thank Jillian enough for this.
When the time came for my daughter to move on, I was so sad that she wasn’t going to have Jillian’s loving, nurturing, warm home to stay at anymore. Thankfully my son still has a few years left of Jillian’s care so my daughter can still sneak in a cuddle when we drop him off. I asked my daughter what she wanted to say to Jillian on her last day of care and she said “Thank you for being such a good teacher and I love you”. Natalie.
